Description

Birdsfoot trefoil is a non-bloating, perennial legume that thrives in diverse environments where alfalfa may struggle. Its ability to reseed under proper management and tolerance of marginal soils makes it a valuable option for pastures, erosion control, and wildlife plantings. Its deep tap root and lateral branches allow it to adapt to a variety of soil conditions while producing high-quality forage.

Plant Characteristics & Benefits

  • Growth Habit: Perennial; heights range from 12 to 30 inches depending on prostrate or erect variety

  • Forage Use: High-quality, non-bloating legume ideal for grazing, hay, and stockpiling

  • Erosion Control: Effective in mine reclamation and disturbed soil projects

  • Wildlife Benefit: Highly attractive forage source for deer and other wildlife

  • Flower/Seed: Bright yellow flowers (4–8 per stem); seed pods resemble a bird’s foot

  • Root System: Deep tap root with extensive lateral roots; ~370,000 seeds per pound

Planting & Maintenance Guidelines

  • Inoculation: Inoculate seed prior to planting for optimal nitrogen fixation

  • Seeding Rate:

    • Pure Stand: 8–10 lbs./acre

    • Mixed Stand: 2–8 lbs./acre, depending on companion grasses

  • Planting Depth: No deeper than ¼ inch

  • Seedbed: Smooth, firm seedbed is ideal

  • Planting Time: Early spring preferred; late summer possible but less successful
